If you are looking for a good mid-priced electric-powered hover mower, then with an RRP of £120, the Flymo Glider Compact 330AX is well worth a look.
Flymo is a well-recognised name when it comes to garden power tools, especially their range of lawnmowers. If you want an electric hover mower then you don’t really have any other choice apart from Flymo, so it’s a good job they have a wide range covering various specification and price points.
The Flymo Glider Compact 330AX sits towards the higher end of the Flymo hover range (the Turbo Lite 330 being the cheapest and the Flymo Glider 330 the most expensive).
So how does the Flymo Glider Compact 330AX compare?
Contents
Lawnmower Type and Power
The Flymo Glider Compact 330AX is an electric hover mower with a grass collector (petrol hover mowers are available, but these tend to be quite rare). The 330AX has a reasonably powerful 1700w motor (the Turbo Lite 330 has a 1150w motor in comparison) that should help cutting longer grass easier.
The 330AX is specced with a metal blade for a neater lawn cut and should last a decent amount of time, just remember to get it sharpened after prolonged periods of usage.
Cutting Performance
The Flymo Glider Compact 330AX has a cutting width of 33cm which is decent when compared to the 25cm width on lower-priced models. This should mean that mowing can be done quickly and makes it ideal for medium-sized gardens. 33cm is the maximum cutting width available in the Flymo hover mower range, so if you want something wider, you’ll have to look at a wheeled rotary mower.
Height can be adjusted between 12 and 32mm and adjustment is done using a neat rotary selector on the front of the mower. An indicator next to the selector shows the cutting height position. If you want a cut height greater than 32mm, then you should consider a wheeled mower.
Grass Collection & Emptying
The Flymo Glider Compact 330AX has an integrated 22 litre grass collection box, so not as big as the 26 litres on the Glider 330 but much better than the lower-priced models that do without a grass collection box.
The box has an easy to see viewing window so you when its time to empty. The grass clippings are compacted as well to ensure that you can minimise trips to the compost heap or waste bin.
Manoeuvrability and Storage
The Flymo Glider Compact 330AX weighs in at 9.4kg, which is easy enough to manage for most medium-sized gardens. Typically, if you want a lighter mower, then you’ll have to go for one without a grass collection box.
The handle can be folded over for easier transportation and storage and the Flymo 330AX is quite easy to carry single-handed with the handle in the folded position. Two wheels are mounted on the front of the mower to make it easier to transport if you prefer not to carry. As this is a “compact” model it has a reduced overall mower height than others in the range, making storage a little easier.
Other Features
A 10 meter long electric cable is included on the Flymo Glider Compact 330AX which is okay for smaller gardens but you may find you still need an extension lead on larger gardens. The cable can be neatly wound around two plastic holders on the handle. The handle itself is designed for left or right-handed use with levers on either side.
As with all hover mowers, there is no rear-mounted roller for that striped lawn effect.
Conclusion
The Flymo Glider Compact 330AX is a good choice for those looking for a well-specced hover mower. It is powerful and has a good cutting width along with decent grass collection box capacity. This makes it ideal if you have a larger garden. Overall, we would say that this mower is definitely worth adding to your shortlist.
